Portrait of a hen

SUZANA

Mixed media on canvas.
40 cm x 60 cm
2024, Paris.

Suzana is a so-called "meat" hen, she was born so that her body would produce as much meat as possible. Fed relentlessly, her weight doubles, triples, quadruples in record time. Her bones, still fragile, struggle to support a body that is growing too quickly.

Hens and chickens live crammed together in a small space. No sky, no sun, no grass to peck at. In these warehouses, the air is unbreathable. The heat, the dust, the gases rising from the droppings, the promiscuity cause a lot of stress.

35 days is their life expectancy in breeding, compared to 8 years of life expectancy in good conditions.

Why? Behind each piece of meat, there are lives like Suzana's.
