RACHEL

​Rachel is first of all a look. Full of sweetness, this look envelops us and challenges us: who is Rachel?
To create this painting, I looked at many images of cows, and I called upon my memory, of all the cows I have met. What were they like? What did they communicate to me? And me, how did I feel in front of them? My compassion was immense, to know them numbered and condemned.
In the world, each year, 293 million cows are killed. Cows that had a life, friends, a mother, perhaps children. Cows that knew humans, perhaps had affection for them. Cows that knew the pleasure, of a contact, of a ray of sunshine on them perhaps. And cows that knew fear. The fear of dying, when they waited their turn in the slaughterhouse, the fear of blood, of smells, of the noises of death.
Rachel is one of them.
