Portrait of a shark

LUNA

Mixed media on canvas.
40 cm x 60 cm
2024, Paris.

In the world, every 3 seconds, a shark is killed.

That's more than 100 million sharks decimated each year, 200 million for the highest estimates.

They are killed for the trade of their fins. The global shark fin trade has reached considerable proportions. To meet this demand, sharks are captured, then traffickers cut off their fins and fins before throwing them back into the water, still alive. The sharks agonize for several hours, sometimes several days, before dying of asphyxiation or hemorrhage.

They are killed by accidental catch by fishermen.

They are killed for their cartilage, sold for therapeutic virtues that have never been scientifically proven.

They are killed for their liver oil, which is found in cosmetics. That's more than 2.7 million deep-sea sharks killed each year.

Yet sharks are sentient.

This is Luna’s story, and it’s the story of millions of others.
