Portrait d'une vache

LÉONORE

Techniques mixtes sur toile.

40 cm x 60 cm

2024, Paris.

Crowned with gold leaf, Leonore shines.
In the world, every year, 293 million cows are killed. Cows that had a life, friends, a mother, maybe children. Cows that knew humans, maybe had affection for them. Cows that knew pleasure, of a touch, of a ray of sunshine on them maybe. And cows that knew fear. The fear of dying, when they waited their turn in the slaughterhouse, the fear of blood, of smells, of the noises of death.
Leonore is one of them.

Cows, like Leonore, have a rich and complex emotional and social life. They feel emotions such as fear, stress, joy and deep emotional bonds.
Cows show signs of distress when separated from their offspring, but also joy when they regain their freedom or interact with their friends.
Their behavior reveals a sensitivity to well-being and a capacity for subjective experiences. The emotional and cognitive complexity they display is completely underestimated in breeding.
Taking into account their sentience implies rethinking our relationship with these animal people, by abolishing unnecessary suffering and respecting their fundamental needs: living in safety, having social interactions, and not experiencing cruel treatment.
