Portrait of Gwenaelle, a haloed sow

GWENAELLE

Mixed media on canvas.
40 cm x 60 cm
2024, Paris.

Gwenaelle is a breeding sow. She was born in a narrow metal cage, where her movements are limited to a simple swing of the head, in constant artificial light. Gwenaelle is a production unit, locked in a cage so narrow that she cannot turn around to see her young.

Breeding sows are considered piglet-producing machines. "Reproductive 696".

The life of piglets is short: fattened too quickly, they end up in the slaughterhouse at the age of 6 months. They are gassed or electrocuted.

You will never meet Gwenaelle, pig farming is still done in closed sheds, far from our compassion.
